The Scribe by Matthew Guinn

Set in Atlanta during the late nineteenth century, around the time of the International Cotton Exposition, The Scribe features a detective who is a disgraced Union veteran, an African-American who is the first of his race allowed on the force, a group of wealthy businessmen known as The Ring, and a serial murderer who has been inscribing letters on the foreheads of his victims in an “infernal spelling bee.” As the hows and whys of the murderer’s actions are unfolded, readers are faced with questions of morality versus supernatural evil. Matthew Guinn will moderate the Southern Fiction Today panel on August 22 at the Mississippi Book Festival.
