With the kids back in school, last-minute road trips and beach getaways are a thing of the past. We hand-picked a few of our favorite events to give moms and dads in our area something to spice up the “back to school” schedule.
Induction Weekend 2017 with the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. August 4 & 5.
This event begins with a “Drawdown of Champions” night at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Tickets are $50. Guests of the party may bid on autographed sports memorabilia and a variety of prizes! “Meet the Inductees” will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the museum, and regular museum ticket prices apply. Saturday evening, a ticketed reception at the Jackson Convention Complex will conclude the festivities.
The Detectives Comedy Dinners with Anjou Restaurant and Char Restaurant. August 5 & 14. 7-9 p.m. $49

Karios of Mississippi Benefit Golf Tournament at Lake Caroline Golf Club. August 18. 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. $95 per person. $340 per team
This fifth annual tournament is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start! The fee includes green fee, cart, refreshments, prizes and lunch. Don’t miss the chance to practice your swing and benefit Kairos of Mississippi’s prison ministry.
Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival at the Jackson Convention Complex. August 18 & 19. Friday - $55 Saturday - $65 2 day - $85
This event features a lineup of your favorite R&B artists! Don’t miss Ludacris, Fantasia, Ro James, Dreezy, and many, many more! This iHeartMEDIA event features over 30 performances on 5 stages right here in our backyard!
Mississippi Book Festival at the Mississippi State Capitol. August 19. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For every literary lover, this event offers live interviews, book signings, kids activities, and capitol tours. More than 150 authors, including favorites like Richard Ford, Greg Isles, Linda W. Jackson, Ron Rash, and Angie Thomas will serve on over 30 panels. General admission is free, while ticketed events may vary.
